Peter Tosh, the Bush Doctor, Mystic Man, Legend, call him what you want
but what he is to Jahcoustic, is one of the greatest musical influences we have. Peter was a founding member
along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer of the Wailing Wailers. He wrote and sang many songs but realised after the Burnin'
album that he was not going to get the number of songs that he deserved. So in 1974 he left the group and ventured out
on his solo career. He started things off with 'Legalize It' which had all of The Wailers playing on the tracks
but Peter singing lead vocals on all tracks. He followed that incredible album with another legendary album 'Equal
Rights'. He continued to release albums throughout the 70's and early 80's ending with the great 'No Nuclear War' album.
Sadly Peter was gunned down in his Jamaican home in 1987. His legacy continues on but sadly he has never received the recognition
that he deserves and the recognition that his friend and band-mate Bob Marley has received. Tosh fans know that
one day Peter's light will shine as brightly as Bob's.
Jahcoustic's

So do you want to know who Peter Tosh is? To start off Peter is no longer here with
us in the flesh. Peter was assassinated in his Jamaican home along with some friends on September 11, 1987 at the age of 42.
It was a great loss to the music world especially the world of reggae and Rastafari. Peter was born Winston Hubert McIntosh
on October 19, 1944 in Westmoreland, JA which is a quiet fishing type place on the south-western kind of side of Jamaica.
To many people on the island it would be considered the country. His mausoleum is located in Westmoreland on the seaside
property that his mother Alvira Coke owns. She still lives in the house that sits behind the mausoleum and can be seen
many days sitting on her front porch enjoying the daily Jamaican vibes.
Peter was
a gifted musician from an early age. He was proficient on the church piano and the homemade guitar he fashioned out of a sardine
can. In the early 60s after moving to Kingston (the capitol of Jamaica) he formed a singing group with some of his friends.
The main nucleus of the group were his pals Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston (later to go by Bunny Wailer). At the time
the group also included Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso and Cherry Smith. After some time those three left the group and
all that remained were Tosh, Marley and Bunny. The decided to name their singing group the Wailing Wailers. Like many other
singers at the time they made their way to Studio One a popular recording studio owned by one Clement Coxsone Dodd (Sir Downbeat).
They recorded many songs over the next handful of years including their first hit "Simmer Down" and "One Love"
Fast forward several years and many recordings (There is lots of info on Peter Tosh on the Internet-this is supposed to be
a quick get to know him summary).
So, fast forward to lets say 1972. The Wailers,
which mainly consisted of Tosh, Marley and Bunny along with musicians Aston "Family Man" Barrett (Bass) his brother
and drummer Carly Barrett and Wya (Wia) Lindo on keys signed a major label recording contract with Island Records. The
first album they released was called "Catch A Fire" followed by "Burnin'" in 1973. After these two albums
and two tours both Bunny and Peter decided to leave the band and venture out on solo careers. There is no doubt they
were both talented enough to go out on their own and did not need to be the harmony behind Bob's songs.
Peter released his first solo LP titled "Lagalize It" on CBS records in 1976. It
was followed by "Equal Rights" in 1977 and a hot of other albums as listed below.
To this day Peter Tosh remains a musical legend and genius and is regarded as such by millions of people around
the world. Peter had a message that was different from both Marley and Bunny and he stuck to his convictions like no other.
He is truly missed but like Bob, at least we have his music to live on with.
